In the studio of the artist, Ottaviano Nelli: creating a fresco

Target age group: primary school (years IV and V) – middle school classes.

Objectives: introduction to the working practices and organisation of a 15th century painter’s workshop, trying out the technique of fresco painting.

Contents: historical background, the various stages of the painting technique, collaboration by the different crafts in the artist’s workshop and creation of a small fresco.

Archaeologists for a day: fun at the dig

Target age group: primary school (years III,IV and V) – middle school classes

Objectives: introduction to stratigraphic excavation with direct experience in a simulated archaeological dig. Conveying the importance of archaeology in reconstructing history and in the conservation of finds used for this purpose.

Contents: elementary theoretical notions about archaeology, stratigraphy and the methodology of archaeological excavation. Piecing together the objects and exhibiting them in a museum.

Welcome to the “domus” with the stone carpets... let’s make a mosaic

Objectives: understanding and applying the technique of Roman mosaics.

Contents: historical background, the various stages in the technique, creation of a mosaic and a visit to the Antiquarium.

Learning how to do illumination in the workshop of Oderisi da Gubbio

Target age group: primary school (years III,IV and V) – middle school classes

Objectives: understanding this special medieval painting technique through practical application.

Contents: historical background to all aspects of the medieval scriptorium with particular reference to the illuminator and his art. Creation of an illuminated illustration.

Innocent forgery: the technique of graffito to reproduce black-figure and red-figure pottery

Destinatari: primary school (years III,IV and V) – middle school classes

Objectives: learning about the collection of Attic vases dating from Roman times housed in the Antiquarium near the Roman Theatre in Gubbio, understanding and applying the technique.

Contents: Historical background, visit to the Antiquarium and a special study of the Attic vases coming from the Roman necropolis at the Vittorina, creation of a decoration with black and red figures.
